US Intercepts China-Russia Air Patrol Near Alaska; Calif. Gov. to Order Homeless Encampments Removal

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) intercepted two Russian and two Chinese bombers flying near Alaska on Wednesday, which a U.S. defense official said was the first time aircraft from the two countries have been intercepted while operating together. The bombers remained in international airspace in Alaska’s Air Defense Identification Zone and were “not seen as a threat,” according to a statement from NORAD.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order on July 25 for the removal of homeless encampments in his state. Mr. Newsom’s order directed state agencies on how to remove the thousands of tents and makeshift shelters across the state that line freeways, clutter shopping center parking lots, and fill city parks. The order makes clear that the decision to remove the encampments remains in the hands of local authorities.

One of the first officers to respond to the Uvalde school massacre in Texas has pleaded not guilty to more than two dozen criminal counts. Former Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District police officer Adrian Gonzales faces 29 counts of abandoning and endangering a child in connection with the May 2022 school shooting that left 19 children and two teachers dead.
