Trump Greeted by Japanese Monarch; US Military Helicopter, Fighter Jet Go Down in South China Sea

President Donald Trump was greeted by Japan's head of state Naruhito at the Imperial Palace in the heart of Tokyo on Monday, as part of the president’s Asia trip aimed at securing trade deals, investment, and increased defense spending. Trump will meet with Japan's new prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, on Tuesday.

A U.S. Navy MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter and an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet went down in the South China Sea in two separate incidents on Sunday. All five personnel involved in the two incidents—three onboard the helicopter and two onboard the fighter jet—were recovered safely. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said the crashes could have been caused by “bad fuel.” He ruled out foul play and said there was nothing to hide.
