Trump Asks Federal Court to Intervene in NY Case; Inflation Holds Steady; Labor Day Travel Peaks

Former President Donald Trump asked a federal court late Thursday to intervene in his New York criminal case, seeking a pathway to overturn his conviction and indefinitely delay his sentencing next month. Lawyers for Trump asked the federal court in Manhattan to seize the case from the state court, arguing that the prosecution violated his constitutional rights.

The Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge did better than expected in July. Data from the Commerce Department shows inflation held at 2.5 percent in July, just shy of the Fed's target of 2 percent. The personal consumption expenditures price index also shows consumer spending is holding steady.

The TSA expects to screen more than 17 million people during the Labor Day travel period, which started on Thursday and runs through next Wednesday. That's about 8 percent more than last year, which would make it the busiest Labor Day travel period on record. Friday is projected to be the peak day, with more than 2.8 million people expected to pass through TSA checkpoints.
