Global Tech Outage Cripples Industries; DNC Discusses Biden Nomination; Russia Sentences Gershkovich

A worldwide tech outage crippled industries from travel to finance Friday before services started coming back online after hours of disruption. Global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said the issue arose from a defect in its software update for Windows systems.

The Democratic National Committee's rules committee is meeting Friday to discuss the virtual voting process to nominate President Joe Biden before the in-person convention begins on Aug. 19. The party is seeking to hold a virtual vote before Aug. 7, but no earlier than Aug. 1.

A Russian court has found U.S. reporter Evan Gershkovich guilty of espionage, and sentenced him to 16 years in a maximum security penal colony. His employer, The Wall Street Journal, called it "a disgraceful sham conviction."
